What is a root canal?
Root canal, also known as endodontics, is a procedure used to treat infection at the centre of the tooth. Root canal treatment is needed when the blood vessels and nerve supply in the centre of the tooth, called the pulp, becomes infected due to decay or injury. A quick response is needed, with precise root canal treatment able to stop the infection from spreading elsewhere in your mouth or causing a painful abscess.
Why have root canal treatment?
The aim of root canal treatment is to clean and sterilise the tooth root canal, removing the bacteria which is causing an infection. The procedure can be used for teeth in any part of the mouth, although there are usually four molar root canals, so it may take a little longer for the back teeth.
Endodontics is the most effective way to restore your oral health while saving your natural tooth from the need for extraction. While removing your affected tooth instantly solves the problem, it is certainly not the preferred option. At Toothi, by restoring your natural tooth with specialist treatment, we can prevent any costs involved with filling the gap, and it has many benefits for your long-term oral health too.
What does root canal treatment involve?
Root canal treatment can take several appointments, especially if yours is a more complex case. Initially, we examine your mouth and take accurate X-rays to get a more detailed image of the infected root canal and aid our diagnosis and treatment planning. We make sure the infection is confined to your tooth and hasn’t begun to spread. We explain the treatment process and give you the chance to ask any questions.
Our specialist Endodontist removes the infected pulp tissues from within your tooth. Local anesthetic is used to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the root canal procedure. Your tooth is then flushed with a special solution to remove all traces of bacteria and remaining debris.
We shape your root canals using tiny and precise dental instruments, widening them so they can be effectively filled. We use a rubber material to fill and seal the canals, ensuring no bacteria can enter.
Our Endodontist then expertly rebuilds your tooth, restoring the function and making sure you can talk and eat normally. In some cases, especially for back teeth, we may need to place a crown or onlay for additional support to the tooth.

Many patients are anxious about the prospect of having root canal treatment, due to the reputation it has for being painful. However, the majority are very surprised at how straightforward and painless endodontics can be. Your mouth is numbed with local anaesthetic during the procedure, so you shouldn’t feel any pain. After your treatment, you may feel some discomfort for a few days, which can be managed with paracetamol as advised.
The length of your treatment depends on a number of factors, including the complexity of your case and where the affected tooth is in your mouth. Treatment takes at least two appointments, and often more, to complete, with each appointment around 30 minutes in total. We will give you an idea of your treatment time during your initial consultation.
The cost of root canal treatment at Toothi depends on the tooth we are treating and how extensive your case is. The initial endodontic consultation is £75. At this appointment, we can give you an estimate of your total treatment fee, including information on ways you can spread the cost if you prefer.
It is likely that you will know straight away that there is a problem with your tooth when you begin feeling pain or sensitivity, but you may not be aware that it is root canal treatment you need. The best way to find out is to visit your dentist to have an examination. In some cases, a tooth can be completely asymptomatic yet need a root canal treatment.
After a root canal treatment on a back tooth, the tooth is often significantly weakened. In these cases, we place a crown or onlay to fully restore your tooth and provide vital support. The addition of the new structure can stop the tooth fracturing or becoming cracked.
The best way to look after your tooth following endodontic treatment is to keep up with a regular brushing and flossing routine. Root filled teeth are still prone to decay, so need to be cared for properly.
