A private emergency dental appointment in the UK typically costs between £50 and £150 or more for the appointment alone, before any treatment is added. The exact fee depends on the practice, the city and whether you need treatment on top of the examination. At Toothi in Edgware an emergency appointment is £65. That covers the examination, diagnosis and immediate pain relief, and any further treatment is quoted in writing before it starts.
What you’re actually paying for
An “emergency dentist cost” usually has two parts, and it helps to separate them before you call anyone. The first is the emergency appointment fee: the examination, a diagnosis of what’s wrong, and enough immediate treatment to get you out of pain. The second is any follow-up treatment the diagnosis leads to: a filling, a root canal, an extraction, a crown, or a repair to a chipped tooth. Most practices, Toothi included, charge the appointment fee separately from whatever treatment comes after it, and give you a written quote for the second part before doing any of it.
Where people get caught out is assuming the appointment fee is the whole cost. If the emergency turns out to need a filling, an extraction or a root canal, that’s priced on top. So a written plan before treatment starts matters more in an emergency than almost anywhere else in dentistry.
Private emergency dentist costs in the UK
Private emergency dental appointments across the UK commonly range from around £50 to well over £150, depending on the practice and the city. Central London clinics and out-of-hours or 24-hour services tend to be at the top of that range. Treatment beyond the appointment is priced separately almost everywhere, so two practices quoting similar appointment fees can still end up very different once treatment is added.
At Toothi London in Edgware, the emergency appointment fee is £65, covering the examination, diagnosis and immediate pain relief. X-rays, where we need to see what’s going on under the surface, are £15 each. Common follow-on treatment includes a composite filling from £145, a tooth extraction from £145, or first-stage root canal pain relief at £350 (full root canal treatment is £450 to £600). All of these are published on our full fee list, and always confirmed in writing before we proceed. 0% finance is available on treatment over £250.

NHS emergency dental care: what it costs
NHS dental treatment in England is charged in a small number of set price bands, published by the NHS, and an urgent or emergency NHS appointment is charged at the lowest of those bands regardless of what’s done at that visit. The current banding is published on nhs.uk and is worth checking directly, since NHS charges are reviewed and can change.
With NHS emergency care the problem is rarely the price. It’s finding an NHS practice with an urgent appointment free at short notice, especially in the evenings and at weekends. NHS 111 can direct you to an available urgent NHS dental service if one exists in your area. A private emergency dentist is generally the faster route when you’re in pain and need to be seen today.
What changes the price
- Whether treatment is needed beyond the appointment: a filling, extraction or root canal is priced separately from the emergency exam almost everywhere.
- X-rays: usually a small extra fee, needed to see decay, infection or a fracture that isn’t visible by eye.
- When you’re seen: some clinics charge more for evenings, weekends or true out-of-hours callouts; ask before you book if this matters to you.
- Where the practice is: central London emergency dentists and 24-hour clinics commonly charge toward the top of the UK range.
- Whether you’re an existing patient: most private practices, Toothi included, see new and existing patients at the same emergency fee.

Emergency dentist cost: frequently asked questions
How much does an emergency dentist cost in the UK?
Private emergency dental appointments commonly range from around £50 to over £150, before any treatment is added. The practice, the city and whether it’s an out-of-hours callout all affect the fee. At Toothi in Edgware, an emergency appointment is £65, covering the examination, diagnosis and immediate pain relief.
Is it cheaper to see an NHS emergency dentist?
NHS urgent dental care is charged at a fixed, lower banded rate. The catch is usually finding an NHS appointment at short notice, not the price. If you can’t reach an NHS dentist, NHS 111 can point you to an urgent NHS dental service, and a private emergency dentist is usually the faster option.
Do I have to pay before treatment starts?
At Toothi, the emergency appointment itself is charged for the visit. Any follow-up treatment (a filling, extraction or root canal, for example) is quoted in writing and agreed with you before it goes ahead.
Does an emergency dentist cost more at weekends?
It can, at some practices. At Toothi, the £65 emergency fee is the same whichever day you’re seen, including Saturdays and Sundays.
What if I can’t afford emergency dental treatment right now?
Tell the practice when you call. A written treatment plan means you know the cost before agreeing to anything, and 0% finance is available on treatment over £250 at Toothi. NHS 111 can also advise on urgent NHS options where availability allows.
Are X-rays included in the emergency fee?
Not at Toothi. X-rays are £15 each, taken only where they’re clinically needed to see what’s causing the problem.
