How much is a hygienist appointment in the UK?
Toothi London, Edgware · Last reviewed 25 October 2026
At Toothi London, a basic hygiene appointment (up to 20 minutes, scale and polish) costs £70, and a comprehensive hygiene appointment (up to 30 minutes, with Airflow) costs £125. On the NHS in England, a scale and polish is part of Band 1 (£27.90), but only when your dentist decides it is clinically needed. Below we explain what each appointment involves, how often to go and how NHS and private hygiene compare.
Prices
What does a scale and polish cost at Toothi?
Both hygiene appointments are listed on our fees page. You can book a hygiene appointment on its own or alongside your check-up.
| Treatment | Toothi price |
|---|---|
| Basic hygiene therapy: up to 20 minutes, scale and polish | £70 |
| Comprehensive hygiene therapy: up to 30 minutes, with Airflow | £125 |
| General check-up (examination), includes oral cancer screening | £55 |
| X-ray | £15 each |
The basic appointment suits people whose gums are healthy and who build up a modest amount of tartar. The comprehensive appointment gives more time and adds Airflow polishing, which suits heavier staining, more tartar, or anyone who wants a more thorough clean. If you need treatment for gum disease beyond a routine clean, that is quoted in writing after assessment.
Comparison
Hygienist cost: NHS vs private
Toothi is a fully private practice and does not provide NHS treatment. The NHS charges below are the official figures for England from 1 April 2026.
| NHS (England) | Toothi London (private) | |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and polish | Band 1: £27.90, only when clinically needed | £70 (up to 20 minutes) |
| Longer clean with Airflow | Not usually part of NHS care | £125 (up to 30 minutes) |
| Booking | Arranged by your dentist as part of a course of treatment | Book directly, with or without a check-up |
On the NHS, a scale and polish is provided when your dentist judges it clinically necessary, for example to treat gum inflammation. A cosmetic clean purely to remove staining is not usually available on the NHS. Private hygiene prices vary between practices, so it is worth comparing published prices and appointment lengths.
Process
What happens at a hygiene appointment?
Check
We look at your gums, note any bleeding and check for areas of tartar build-up.
Scale
Tartar is removed from above and just below the gum line using an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments.
Polish
Teeth are polished to remove surface stains and leave them smooth, so plaque is slower to stick.
Advise
We show you where to focus brushing and cleaning between teeth, with tips for your mouth.
Most people find a hygiene appointment comfortable. If your gums are inflamed or sensitive, some areas can feel tender; tell us and we can adjust or use a numbing gel. Read more about our dental hygiene appointments.
Airflow
What is Airflow and is it worth the extra?
Airflow uses a fine jet of warm water, air and a very fine powder to lift away plaque, biofilm and surface stains. It reaches into small spaces, around braces and between teeth, and many people find it gentler than traditional polishing with a rotating cup and paste.
It is included in our £125 comprehensive appointment. It is particularly useful if you drink tea, coffee or red wine, smoke, wear braces or aligners, or have crowded teeth that are hard to keep clean. It is a cleaning tool, not whitening: it removes surface staining but does not change the natural colour of your teeth. Learn more on our Airflow air polish page.
Frequency
How often should you see a hygienist?
There is no single answer. Many people with healthy gums benefit from a hygiene appointment every six months. People with a history of gum disease, heavy tartar build-up, diabetes, or who smoke may need to go more often, sometimes every three to four months. Others with very healthy gums and low build-up may need it less.
Your dentist will recommend an interval based on your gums at your check-up.
Value
Is it worth paying privately for a hygienist?
If your NHS dentist provides a scale and polish when it is clinically needed, that is good care and good value. People often choose private hygiene appointments because they want a regular, preventive clean even when there is no active problem, a longer appointment, Airflow, or more flexible times, including weekends.
Regular cleaning, together with good brushing and cleaning between teeth at home, helps keep gums healthy. Gum disease is a common cause of tooth loss in adults, and catching bleeding gums early is usually simpler than treating advanced disease later.
Common Questions
Hygienist Cost FAQs
How much is a scale and polish privately?
At Toothi London a basic scale and polish of up to 20 minutes is £70. A comprehensive appointment of up to 30 minutes with Airflow is £125. Private prices vary between practices.
Can I get a scale and polish on the NHS?
Yes, when your dentist decides it is clinically needed. It falls under Band 1, which is £27.90 in England from 1 April 2026. A purely cosmetic clean is not usually provided on the NHS.
Do I need a check-up before seeing the hygienist?
You can book a hygiene appointment directly at Toothi. We do recommend a regular check-up, which is £55 and includes oral cancer screening, so the dentist can examine your teeth and gums as a whole.
What is the difference between the £70 and £125 appointments?
The £70 appointment is up to 20 minutes for a scale and polish. The £125 appointment is up to 30 minutes and includes Airflow polishing, which suits heavier staining or tartar.
Does a hygiene appointment hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. Inflamed gums can feel tender during cleaning, and we can adjust our approach or use a numbing gel if needed. Sensitivity usually settles quickly afterwards.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
Many people go every six months, but some need appointments every three to four months, depending on gum health and tartar build-up. Your dentist will recommend the right interval for you.
Does Airflow whiten teeth?
Airflow removes surface stains, so teeth can look brighter afterwards. It does not change the natural colour of your teeth. For that, whitening is a separate treatment.
