At Toothi London, wisdom tooth removal costs from £295 per tooth. A fully erupted wisdom tooth that comes out simply may be charged as a simple extraction, £145. X-rays are £15 each. On the NHS in England, wisdom tooth removal is a Band 2 treatment (£76.60) when clinically necessary, with complex cases often referred to hospital. Here is how the price is worked out, what affects it, and how NHS and private routes compare.

Prices

How much does it cost to remove a wisdom tooth?

Our prices are published on our fees page. Wisdom teeth vary more than any other teeth in how they sit, so the first step is always an examination and x-ray. You will then have a written figure before any treatment.

TreatmentToothi price
Wisdom tooth extraction (complex or surgical)from £295 per tooth
Fully erupted wisdom tooth that comes out simply£145 (charged as a simple extraction)
X-ray£15 each
Emergency appointment (if you are in pain)£65

If more than one wisdom tooth needs to come out, each tooth is priced individually. Your dentist will explain whether it makes sense to remove them at the same visit or separately.

Comparison

Wisdom tooth removal: NHS vs private cost

Toothi is a fully private practice and does not provide NHS treatment. The figures below are the official NHS charges in England from 1 April 2026, for comparison.

On the NHS, wisdom teeth are generally removed when there is a clinical reason, such as repeated infection, decay or damage to the neighbouring tooth, in line with national guidance. Teeth that are healthy and causing no problems are usually left in place, whichever route you choose. Hospital referrals can involve a wait. Private prices vary between practices, so compare published price lists if you are weighing up options.

Price Factors

What affects the cost of wisdom teeth removal?

  • ✓  How far the tooth has come through. A fully erupted tooth with straight roots may come out as simply as any other tooth. A partly erupted tooth often needs more work.
  • ✓  The angle of the tooth. Lower wisdom teeth commonly lean forwards into the tooth in front. These usually need a surgical approach.
  • ✓  Bone coverage. If the tooth sits partly under bone, a small amount may need to be removed to reach it.
  • ✓  Root shape. Curved or hooked roots can mean the tooth is divided into sections and removed in pieces.
  • ✓  Closeness to the nerve or sinus. If the x-ray shows the roots very close to the nerve in the lower jaw or to the sinus above, we will usually refer you on to a registered specialist oral surgeon, who may need further 3D imaging.

Upper wisdom teeth are often simpler than lower ones, but this is not always the case. The x-ray is what tells us.

Inclusions

What’s included in the wisdom tooth price?

  • ✓  Local anaesthetic. The area is fully numbed before we begin.
  • ✓  The removal. Including opening the gum or sectioning the tooth where needed.
  • ✓  Dissolving stitches. Placed if the gum needs closing.
  • ✓  Aftercare. Clear guidance on eating, cleaning and what is normal.

X-rays are charged separately at £15 each. If the case needs an oral surgeon, their consultation, imaging and treatment are quoted and paid to them directly.

Recovery

What is recovery like after wisdom tooth removal?

Most people have some swelling, stiffness and soreness for a few days, usually peaking around day two or three and then settling. Simple cases often feel much better within a week; surgical cases can take a little longer. Your usual painkiller, following the packet instructions, usually helps; ask a pharmacist if unsure.

Pain that gets worse after a few days rather than better can be a sign of dry socket, and you should contact us. If you have swelling that is spreading, affects your breathing, swallowing or eye, or you have a high temperature, go to A&E or call 999. Out of hours, call NHS 111.

Value

Is it worth paying privately for wisdom tooth removal?

For many people, the NHS route works well, particularly for complex cases where a hospital oral surgery team is the right place for treatment. If you have access to an NHS dentist and are happy with the timescales, there is no need to go private.

People choose private care when they want to be seen sooner, want to choose their appointment time, or want more time to talk through options. At Toothi we are open seven days and publish our prices in full. If you are not sure whether your wisdom tooth needs to come out at all, a check-up is a good place to start. Our page on wisdom tooth removal in Edgware explains how we approach it.

Common Questions

Wisdom Tooth Cost FAQs

How much does wisdom tooth removal cost privately?

At Toothi London wisdom tooth removal is from £295 per tooth, with x-rays at £15 each. A fully erupted wisdom tooth that comes out simply may be charged as a simple extraction, £145. Private prices vary between practices.

Is wisdom tooth removal free on the NHS?

Not usually for adults. In England it is a Band 2 treatment, £76.60 from 1 April 2026, when clinically necessary, unless you are exempt from NHS charges. Complex cases may be referred to hospital.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. Wisdom teeth that are healthy and causing no problems are usually left alone. Removal is generally recommended when there is repeated infection, decay, damage to the neighbouring tooth or other clinical problems.

Why does wisdom tooth removal cost more than a normal extraction?

Wisdom teeth are often angled, partly under the gum or bone, or have curved roots. Removing them can mean opening the gum or dividing the tooth, which takes more time and care.

Will I be referred to an oral surgeon?

Sometimes. If the x-ray shows the roots very close to the nerve or sinus, or the tooth is deeply impacted, we may refer you on to a registered specialist oral surgeon. They will quote and charge their own fee.

How long does it take to recover from wisdom tooth removal?

Most people feel sore and a little swollen for a few days, typically easing within a week. Surgical cases can take longer. Contact us if pain gets worse after a few days.

Can I have all four wisdom teeth out at once?

It depends on your case. Each tooth is assessed and priced individually, and your dentist will advise whether removing more than one at a visit is sensible. Complex multiple removals are often referred on.
