We Can Help With

Common dental emergencies

Severe Toothache

Persistent or throbbing pain usually signals infection or decay reaching the nerve — it rarely resolves on its own. We’ll find the cause and work to settle the pain.

Chipped or Broken Teeth

From a small chip to a fractured tooth — quick treatment protects the nerve and often saves the tooth. Many repairs can be done the same day with composite.

Lost Crowns, Fillings & Knocked-Out Teeth

A lost filling or crown exposes sensitive tooth fast. Knocked-out adult tooth? Keep it in milk and call immediately — minutes matter.

Swelling & Dental Abscess

Facial swelling can become serious quickly. We’ll drain infection where clinically appropriate, prescribe where indicated and treat the cause — don’t wait on an abscess.

For context, private emergency dental appointments in the UK commonly run from around £50 to well over £150 depending on the practice and the city, before any treatment is added. NHS urgent dental care is charged at the Band 1 urgent rate where an NHS appointment is available — the difficulty is usually finding one at short notice. Our £65 fee covers the appointment itself: examination, diagnosis and immediate pain relief.

Where To Go

NHS, A&E or a private emergency dentist?

  • ✓  A&E — for uncontrolled bleeding, swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, or facial trauma. This is the right call and you should go straight there.
  • ✓  NHS 111 — if you cannot reach a dentist, 111 can direct you to an urgent NHS dental service. Availability at evenings and weekends varies considerably across North London.
  • ✓  A private emergency dentist — for toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling, or an abscess. This is almost always faster, and it is what we are set up for.

If you are unsure how urgent it is, call us and describe what is happening. We would rather talk you through it than have you sit in pain guessing.

While You Wait

What to do before you get here

  • ✓  Toothache — take your usual over-the-counter painkiller as directed on the packet. Never place aspirin directly against the gum.
  • ✓  Knocked-out adult tooth — hold it by the crown, not the root; rinse gently in milk if dirty; reinsert into the socket if you can, or keep it in milk. Call us straight away.
  • ✓  Broken tooth — rinse with warm salty water and keep any fragments. Avoid chewing on that side.
  • ✓  Swelling — a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help. If swelling is spreading towards the eye or throat, treat it as an A&E matter.
  • ✓  Lost crown or filling — keep the crown, avoid extremes of hot and cold, and bring it with you.

General guidance only — it is not a substitute for being seen. Individual circumstances vary.

Common Questions

Emergency FAQs

Can I get a same-day emergency dentist appointment in Edgware?

Yes — we hold emergency slots every day we’re open, including Saturdays and Sundays. Call 020 3148 2444 as early as you can and we’ll fit you in as soon as possible.

Where can I see an emergency dentist today?

If you are in or near Edgware, call us on 020 3148 2444 — we keep same-day slots and see patients who are not registered with us. If we cannot get you in, NHS 111 can point you towards an urgent NHS dental service, and A&E is the right place for uncontrolled bleeding, facial trauma or swelling affecting your breathing.

How much does an emergency dentist cost?

£65 for the emergency appointment at Toothi, which covers examination and immediate pain relief. Any X-rays are £15 each and follow-up treatment is quoted in writing before we proceed. Across the UK, private emergency appointments commonly range from around £50 to over £150 before treatment.

Is there a dental clinic in Edgware that takes emergencies?

Yes. Toothi is at 1 Handel Parade, Whitchurch Lane, Edgware HA8 6LD, two minutes from Edgware station, and we hold same-day emergency appointments including at weekends. You do not need to be an existing patient.

Are you open at weekends?

Yes — we’re open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday: 9am–6pm
Thursday: 9am–12pm
Saturday: 9am–5pm
Sunday: 10am–5pm
Please see our contact page for current opening hours.

I’ve knocked out a tooth — what do I do?

Act fast: hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and either reinsert it into the socket or keep it in milk. Call us immediately — teeth reimplanted within an hour generally have the best chance of surviving, although outcomes vary.

Can you help if I’m not a registered patient?

Yes — we see emergency patients who’ve never visited us before. Many become regulars once they’ve seen how we look after people.

Can I go to A&E with a tooth problem?

Go to A&E for uncontrolled bleeding, swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, or facial trauma. A&E cannot usually carry out dental treatment such as fillings, extractions or root canals — for toothache, broken teeth and abscesses a dentist is the right place and far faster.

Do you offer emergency appointments for children?

Yes. Call and tell us what has happened — knocked-out or displaced baby and adult teeth are handled differently, so it helps us to know the child’s age when you ring.
