Chrome dentures vs acrylic (plastic) dentures

• Thickness: a chrome framework can be made a fraction of the thickness of acrylic, so the roof of your mouth is left largely uncovered — food tastes like food again, and speech settles more quickly.
• Strength: cobalt-chrome does not flex or snap the way a plastic denture can. It is the more durable long-term choice.
• Support: a chrome denture rests on your remaining teeth rather than pressing down on the gum, which spreads the load and is kinder to the underlying bone.
• Cost: acrylic dentures are cheaper up front and are ideal as an immediate or temporary denture. Chrome costs more but usually lasts considerably longer.
• Comfort: most patients who move from acrylic to chrome say the difference in bulk is the thing they notice first.

A plastic denture is not a bad denture — it is simply a different tool. Immediately after extractions, while the gum is still healing and changing shape, an acrylic denture is usually the sensible starting point, with chrome made later once things have settled.

What the process involves

Chrome dentures are made across a small number of short appointments. We take detailed impressions of your mouth, record how your teeth meet, then have the framework cast and try it in before the teeth are added — so you get to see and feel the fit at each stage rather than at the end. Adjustments in the first week or two are normal and are part of the treatment.

Dentures at Toothi start from £595, and complete dentures from £995. Because a chrome denture is designed around your remaining teeth, the exact fee depends on the number of teeth being replaced and the design of the framework — you will be given a written quote at your assessment before anything is made. Would an implant be better?

Sometimes, yes — and we will tell you if we think so. Dental implants (from £1,995 including the crown) replace teeth without any removable plate at all, and implant-retained dentures use two to four implants to lock a denture firmly in place. A chrome denture remains the right answer for many people, particularly where several teeth are missing in different parts of the mouth or where bone volume is limited. Frequently asked questions

Will the metal clasps show when I smile?

Not usually. Clasps are positioned on back or less visible teeth wherever the design allows, and can often be tooth-coloured or hidden altogether depending on which teeth are being replaced.

How long do chrome dentures last?

Well-maintained chrome frameworks routinely last many years — considerably longer than an acrylic denture — though the gums and bone underneath change over time, so relines or adjustments may be needed.

Can I have a chrome denture straight after extractions?

No — your gums need a few months to settle first. We would normally fit a temporary acrylic denture in the meantime and make the chrome once the shape of the ridge is stable.

Do you repair dentures?

Yes. Bring it in and we will assess whether it can be repaired, relined or is better replaced.
