Replacement retainers in Edgware: clear or fixed, booked online
Toothi London, Edgware · Last reviewed 16 October 2026
Lost, cracked or no longer fitting? A replacement clear retainer at Toothi is £150 for one arch or £250 for both, made from a new iTero 3D scan taken here in Edgware. A replacement fixed wire retainer is £250. You can book the retainer scan directly online under Consultations, there is no separate assessment fee on top, and you do not need to have had your braces or Invisalign with us.
The one thing that matters is speed. Teeth start to drift surprisingly quickly without a retainer, especially in the first year or two after treatment, and the longer the gap the less likely a new retainer is to fit the position you finished in. If you still have your last Invisalign aligner and it goes in without forcing, wear it at night until your new retainer is ready.

Which Type
Clear removable or fixed wire?
| Clear removable retainer | Fixed wire retainer | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A thin, clear plastic retainer, similar in look to an Invisalign aligner, worn mostly at night | A thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth, usually lower canine to canine |
| Visible? | Almost invisible, but you take it out to eat and clean | Not visible from the front; nothing to remember to wear |
| Lifespan | Typically a few years with good care; cracks and wear mean replacement | Often lasts many years, but sections can come loose and need re-bonding |
| Best for | Anyone who will wear it reliably; people who grind can wear it as a light nightguard too | People who know they will forget a removable one; front teeth that moved a lot |
| Price | £150 one arch · £250 both | £250 per arch |
Many patients have both: a fixed wire on the lower front teeth and a clear retainer over the top at night. If you are not sure which you need, book the scan appointment and we will advise on the day. Read more on our fixed retainer guide.

Looking After It
Making your retainer last
- ✓ Rinse with cool water every time it comes out, and brush it gently with a soft brush and a little mild soap. Hot water warps clear retainers.
- ✓ Avoid toothpaste on the retainer — it is abrasive and clouds the plastic.
- ✓ Case, not tissue. Most lost retainers were wrapped in a napkin and thrown away with a plate.
- ✓ Keep it away from dogs and heat. Dogs chew them; car dashboards and radiators melt them.
- ✓ Wear it as advised. A retainer in a drawer is not a retainer. If it starts to feel tight, you have been missing nights — wear it more, not less, and call us if it will not seat.
Common Questions
Replacement retainer FAQs
How much is a replacement retainer at Toothi?
A clear removable retainer is £150 for one arch or £250 for both. A fixed wire retainer is £250 per arch. There is no separate charge for the scan appointment.
Do I need to be a Toothi patient, or to have had my braces here?
No. We make replacement retainers for anyone, whoever straightened your teeth. Book the retainer scan online under Consultations.
How quickly can I get a new retainer?
Book the scan for the earliest slot that suits you — we are open seven days a week, including Sundays. Clear retainers are made by our laboratory after the scan and we confirm the collection date when you book.
I have lost my retainer. What should I do until the new one is ready?
If you still have your last Invisalign aligner or an older retainer and it seats without forcing, wear it at night. If nothing fits, book the scan as soon as you can; the sooner the new retainer is made, the closer it will match the position your teeth finished in.
My retainer still fits but it is cracked or cloudy. Do I need a new one?
A cracked retainer will not hold your teeth evenly and usually gets worse quickly, so yes. Cloudiness alone is cosmetic, but it often comes with wear and a looser fit, so it is worth having it looked at.
Does the retainer appointment include a check-up?
No. The retainer scan appointment is for the retainer only and does not include an examination of your teeth. If you would like a check-up too, book one separately (£55).
Are retainers included with Invisalign at Toothi?
Yes. Every Invisalign package includes your removable retainers and a fixed wire retainer at the end of treatment. Replacements after that are charged at the prices on this page.
