Braces for Adults: Is It Too Late, and What Are the Options?
Nearly every adult starts with some version of “am I too old for this?”. No, you’re not, and we don’t say that to be polite. Teeth move throughout life under gentle, steady pressure. That’s why they drift out of position in the first place. The same biology that straightens a fifteen-year-old’s teeth works at forty-five.
What matters is the health of the foundation, not your age. That means gums free of active disease, enough bone support and no untreated decay. Get those right and there’s no upper age limit worth worrying about.

Why so many adults end up here
Most adult cases fall into one of three groups. The first had braces as a teenager, stopped wearing the retainer somewhere around university, and watched the front teeth slowly crowd again. That’s orthodontic relapse, and it’s by far the most common reason adults come back. The second never had treatment and got to the point of not wanting to hide their teeth in photos any more. The third has a functional problem, such as a bite that’s wearing teeth down unevenly or crowding that makes some teeth impossible to clean properly.
Take that third group seriously. Crowded, overlapping teeth trap plaque where a brush can’t reach, and an uneven bite puts the force on a few teeth instead of spreading it. So straightening is sometimes cosmetic and sometimes preventive.
The discreet options
Most adults asking about braces really want to know how to avoid looking like they’re wearing braces at work.
Clear aligners are the usual answer. They’re removable clear trays that people rarely notice in conversation, and you take them out for meals (and for the odd presentation, if you’d rather). Ceramic fixed braces use tooth-coloured brackets instead of metal. You can still see them, but they’re far less obvious, and they handle complex movements that aligners can struggle with.
Lingual braces sit behind the teeth, so nothing shows from the front. They’re the most discreet option and the most expensive, and your speech takes a few weeks to adjust.

How long adult treatment takes
At Toothi, Invisalign Go Express takes typically around 3 months, Invisalign Go typically around 6 months and Invisalign Go Plus typically around 9 months. Complex cases are quoted after assessment and referred on where appropriate. Relapse cases, where the teeth were straight once and have drifted, usually need the least movement. We confirm your own timeline in writing after your scan.
Adult teeth do move a little more slowly than a teenager’s, because the bone around them is denser and remodels less actively. In practice that adds weeks, not years.
What adult braces cost

The honest caveats
Three things to know before you commit. Gum health comes first: if there’s active gum disease, we treat it before moving any tooth, without exception. Aligners only work when they’re in your mouth, so 20 to 22 hours a day is a commitment, not a guideline. And retainers are for life, at night. Otherwise the teeth drift again, just as they did the first time.
