Chipped tooth repair cost

Repairing a chipped tooth costs from £195 at Toothi London in Edgware, using composite edge bonding in a single visit with no drilling. A larger chip that needs the whole front surface rebuilt is a composite veneer at £295 per tooth, and a tooth that has lost significant structure may need a crown from £595. If the tooth is painful, sensitive or bleeding, book an emergency appointment at £65 first.

Fees correct as of September 2026. Set and reviewed by Dr Ali El-Kabengi (GDC 270807), principal dentist at Toothi London, 1 Handel Parade, Edgware HA8 6LD, who has a special interest in composite bonding.

What to do right now

If you have just chipped a tooth:

  • Keep the fragment if you can find it, in milk or saliva. A clean break on a front tooth can sometimes be bonded back on.
  • Rinse gently with warm water and check for sharp edges. A sharp edge can cut your tongue or lip within hours.
  • Cover a sharp edge temporarily with orthodontic wax or sugar-free chewing gum if you cannot be seen straight away.
  • Avoid biting on it and avoid very hot or cold food and drink if the tooth is sensitive.
  • Take your usual painkillers if it aches, following the instructions on the packet.

Call us on 020 3148 2444 and we will tell you whether it needs seeing today or can wait for a routine appointment.

When a chip is an emergency

Most chips are cosmetic and can wait a few days. See a dentist urgently if there is throbbing or persistent pain, if the tooth is sensitive to air or cold, if you can see a pink or red spot in the middle of the broken surface, if the tooth is loose or has moved, or if the break goes below the gum line. Those suggest the nerve is exposed or the tooth is fractured deeper than it looks, and waiting makes the treatment bigger.

An emergency appointment at Toothi is £65 and includes diagnosis, pain relief where needed and a written plan for what comes next. See our emergency dentist page or read about cracked and broken teeth.

Why bonding is usually the answer for a chip

Composite edge bonding rebuilds the broken corner with a tooth-coloured composite that is shaped and polished by hand, matched to the shade of the tooth next to it. It is done in one appointment, and for a simple edge chip it normally needs no drilling and no anaesthetic — the composite bonds to the existing enamel.

That last point is the reason to prefer it. A crown or a porcelain veneer requires removing sound tooth to make room, and once that tooth has been cut it cannot be uncut. Bonding is reversible in the sense that nothing healthy was taken away. For a chipped front tooth on an otherwise sound tooth, it is both the lower-cost and the more conservative option, and it is what we would recommend for most people.

Bonding is not indestructible. Composite can stain over years and can chip again if you grind or bite your nails, and it typically needs repolishing or replacing sooner than porcelain does. If you grind, a nightguard at £195 protects the repair.

If more than one tooth is chipped

Edge bonding — 4 teeth£695
Edge bonding — 6 teeth£995
Composite veneers — 4 front teeth£1,095
Composite veneers — 6 teeth£1,595
Composite veneers — 8 teeth (full smile line)£1,995

Worn or chipped edges across several front teeth are often a sign of grinding or an uneven bite rather than a series of accidents. If that is what we find, we will tell you, because repairing the teeth without addressing the cause means repairing them again. Common questions

Can a chipped tooth be fixed on the NHS?

A chipped tooth can be repaired on the NHS where there is a clinical need — a filling or repair falls under Band 2 at £76.60. Purely cosmetic improvement is not available on the NHS. Toothi is a fully private practice, so the prices here are directly comparable with any other private clinic.

How long does bonding on a chipped tooth last?

Typically several years, and often longer with good care. The variables are how much force the tooth takes, whether you grind, and habits like biting nails or opening packaging with your teeth. Composite also picks up staining over time from tea, coffee and red wine, and can be repolished. It is repairable, which porcelain largely is not.

Will the repair match my other teeth?

That is the whole skill of it. The shade is matched at the start of the appointment, and composite is built in layers because a real tooth is not one flat colour. Worth knowing: bonding cannot be whitened later, so if you are thinking about whitening, have it done first and bond to the new shade. Whitening is £250 in practice or £350 with home trays.

Does repairing a chipped tooth hurt?

For a simple edge chip, usually not at all — there is often no drilling and no injection needed. If the chip is deeper, has exposed dentine, or there is decay to remove, local anaesthetic is used and it feels like having a filling.
