Teeth Whitening Cost UK 2026: What You’ll Actually Pay
Dentist-provided teeth whitening in the UK generally costs between about £180 and £700, depending on the practice and the system used. At Toothi London in Edgware it is £250 for a single in-practice session or £350 for custom home trays with professional gel, plus a £55 examination first. Anything advertised at £50 in a salon is not dentist-provided whitening, and in the UK it is not legal.
This guide sets out what the real price bands are, what sits behind them and what to check before you pay. Prices quoted for Toothi are from our published fee list and were correct on 12 October 2026.
How much does teeth whitening cost in the UK?
Across published UK dental-practice price lists checked in September 2026, dentist-provided whitening sits in a band of roughly £180 to £700. Most practices land somewhere in the middle, and the spread is driven more by location and by the system a practice has chosen than by anything that changes your final shade.
| What you’re buying | Typical UK price | At Toothi |
| Dental examination before whitening | £25–£120 | £55 |
| In-practice (“power” or single-visit) whitening | £180–£600 | £250 |
| Custom home trays with professional gel | £200–£450 | £350 |
| Combined in-practice plus home top-up | £400–£700 | Quoted individually |
| Replacement gel syringe for existing trays | £20–£75 | Quoted individually |
| Supermarket whitening strips and toothpastes | £4–£30 | Not a whitening treatment — see below |
Two things are worth noticing about that table. The first is how wide the dentist band is for what is, clinically, the same procedure. The second is that the lowest-priced row in it — the strips and pastes on a supermarket shelf — is not in the same category at all. UK law caps what a retail product may contain at 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, which is roughly a sixtieth of what a dentist may prescribe. Those products can lift surface staining. They cannot change the underlying shade of your teeth.
Why one practice charges £200 and another £700
The honest answer is that very little of the difference is clinical. What actually moves the price:
- Location. Published whitening prices vary widely by area, and central London practices sit at the top of the band. This is the single biggest source of spread in the table above.
- Which system the practice buys. Some whitening systems are licensed at a much higher cost to the practice than others, and that cost is passed on. All UK-legal systems work within the same 6% hydrogen peroxide ceiling.
- Whether the examination is priced separately. A £199 headline that becomes £199 plus a consultation, plus X-rays, plus a hygiene appointment is not a £199 treatment. Ask for the total.
- Whether the trays are included. Custom trays are the part you keep. A price that does not include them is a price for one course only.
- Whether a hygiene clean is needed first. Whitening over heavy tartar gives a patchy result. Some quotes assume a clean; most do not include one.
What does not reliably change with price is the result. Contact time between gel and tooth matters far more than the badge on the syringe.
What teeth whitening costs at Toothi London
Toothi publishes two whitening prices and does not quote above them.
| Dental examination and whitening assessment | £55 |
| Power whitening (in practice) — Boutique Whitening, single visit | £250 |
| Home whitening — custom trays and professional gel, results over 2–3 weeks | £350 |
The examination comes first because it has to: a dental professional must examine you before the first use of a whitening product. It includes an oral cancer screening. If a hygiene appointment would materially improve your result we will say so rather than whiten over it — basic hygiene therapy is £70 and a 30-minute clean with Airflow stain removal is £125.
Whitening is also included in every Invisalign package at Toothi, along with the iTero scan, all review appointments, refinement aligners, removable and fixed retainers and an Airflow clean. If you are considering both, the whitening is not a separate cost.
On paying in instalments: treatment over £250 can be spread over up to 10 months at 0% interest, or over up to 60 months at 12.9% APR representative (fixed). Home whitening at £350 falls above that threshold; the £250 in-practice session does not. Cherry Dental Ltd trading as Toothi is a credit broker, not a lender, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 957242). Credit is provided by Tabeo, subject to status.
Is teeth whitening available on the NHS?
Not for cosmetic reasons. NHS dentistry funds treatment that is clinically necessary, and lightening healthy teeth is not. The narrow exception is where discolouration is the result of a specific clinical problem — an internally discoloured root-treated tooth, for example — and even then it is at the dentist’s clinical discretion and is not the same treatment as a cosmetic whitening course.
In practice, if you want whiter teeth you are paying privately, and the figures above are the ones that apply. Toothi is a fully private practice and does not provide NHS treatment.
The law, and why the cheap options are cheap
Tooth whitening is a dental procedure in UK law. Products containing more than 0.1% and up to 6% hydrogen peroxide — or the equivalent released from carbamide peroxide — may only be supplied to dental practitioners, the first use in any course must be by a dental professional who has examined the patient, and whitening must not be carried out on anyone under 18.
That has three consequences for the price you see advertised:
- A beauty salon offering whitening at £59 is either breaking the law or using a product too weak to change your shade. Carrying out tooth whitening without General Dental Council registration is illegal practice of dentistry, and people have been prosecuted for it.
- Online “16%” or “35%” gels sold for home use are outside the legal limit for tooth whitening in the UK, and are being used on you without anyone having examined your teeth first.
- The ill-fitting tray is the real risk, not the gel. A boil-and-bite tray leaks gel onto the gums. That is what causes the chemical burns people describe after cut-price whitening, and it is the thing a scan-made custom tray is for.
If a price looks far below the band in this guide, the question to ask is not “why is this cheaper?” but “who is legally allowed to do this, and have they looked at my teeth?”
What you should be told before you pay
A reasonable whitening quote answers all of these in writing before any money changes hands:
- What the total is, including the examination, any X-rays and any hygiene appointment.
- Whether custom trays are included and whether you keep them.
- What a top-up syringe of gel costs later.
- What happens if your result is less than you hoped — whether a further course is chargeable.
- Whether you have any crowns, veneers, bonding or white fillings on show, and what will happen to them.
Whitening with crowns, veneers and bonding
Whitening lightens natural enamel. It does not change the colour of composite bonding, veneers, crowns or white fillings, and that has a direct effect on the order — and the cost — of cosmetic work. The sequence that works is: whiten first, let the shade settle for a couple of weeks, then match any new bonding or veneers to the brighter teeth.
Doing it the other way round means paying twice, because restorations matched to your old shade will look dark against newly whitened teeth and have to be redone. If you are planning a set of composite veneers or edge bonding, put the whitening at the front of the plan rather than the end of it — our composite bonding cost guide sets out how the two fit together.
How long the result lasts, and what a top-up costs
Whitening is not permanent. Most patients hold their result for somewhere between six months and two or three years, and the range is that wide because it is driven almost entirely by diet and smoking — tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco are what bring the shade back down.
This is the strongest argument for the home-tray route even though it costs more up front. The trays are the durable part. Once you have them, maintenance is a syringe of gel and a few nights, at a fraction of a fresh course. A treatment that costs more on day one can be the cheaper of the two over five years.
Teeth whitening cost FAQs
How much do dentists charge to whiten teeth in the UK?
Published UK dental-practice prices checked in September 2026 run from about £180 to £700, with the examination sometimes charged separately. Toothi London in Edgware publishes £250 for in-practice whitening and £350 for custom home trays, after a £55 examination. Ask any practice for the total, not the headline.
Is it worth paying for teeth whitening?
That depends on what is discolouring your teeth. Surface and age-related yellowing responds well and the change is usually obvious. Greyish discolouration, internal staining and marks from old fillings respond less predictably, and a good dentist will tell you that at the assessment rather than after you have paid. Results vary.
How long does dentist teeth whitening last?
Typically six months to two or three years, depending on diet and smoking. Tea, coffee and red wine bring the shade back fastest. If you have custom trays you keep them, so maintaining the result is a top-up gel syringe rather than a repeat course, which makes the long-run cost much lower.
Is permanent teeth whitening a real thing?
No. No whitening treatment available in the UK is permanent, and any practice advertising it as such is overstating what the procedure does. Teeth pick up stain again with normal eating and drinking. What varies is how long the result holds and how easily you can maintain it.
Can you get teeth whitening on the NHS?
Not for cosmetic reasons. NHS dentistry covers clinically necessary treatment, and whitening healthy teeth is not clinically necessary. A narrow clinical exception exists for some internally discoloured teeth, at the dentist’s discretion. Otherwise whitening is a private treatment and the private price bands above apply.
Why is salon teeth whitening so much cheaper?
Because it is either not legal or not effective. Only registered dental professionals may carry out tooth whitening in the UK, and only they may use products above 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. A salon can lawfully sell you a 0.1% product, which will not change your underlying shade. Anything stronger, applied by a non-registrant, is illegal.
Does whitening work on crowns and veneers?
No. Whitening changes natural enamel only, so crowns, veneers, composite bonding and white fillings stay the colour they were made. Whiten first and match new work to the brighter shade afterwards. If you already have a crown on a front tooth, whitening around it can make it look darker by comparison.
