What Is IPR in Invisalign? Interproximal Reduction Explained

If you’ve started looking into Invisalign, you may have come across the term “IPR” in your treatment plan and wondered what it means. It sounds technical, but it’s a routine, well-established part of many orthodontic treatments. Here’s a plain-English explanation.

What IPR actually is

IPR stands for interproximal reduction. It’s the careful removal of a very small amount of enamel — often just a fraction of a millimetre — from between certain teeth. The goal is to create a little extra space so your teeth can move into a straighter, better-aligned position.

Why it’s sometimes needed

When teeth are crowded, there simply isn’t enough room for them to line up neatly. IPR creates that room without the need for extractions in many cases. It can also help improve how the teeth meet, close small dark triangles between teeth, and give a more stable, longer-lasting result. Not everyone needs it — whether it’s part of your plan depends entirely on your teeth.

Does IPR hurt?

No. Because only the outer enamel is involved — and enamel has no nerves — IPR is painless and doesn’t usually need any anaesthetic. It’s done quickly and gently, often using fine strips or a precise instrument, and most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is.

Is it safe? Will it damage my teeth?

Done properly by a trained dentist, IPR is safe and has been used in orthodontics for decades. The amount of enamel removed is tiny and stays well within safe limits. It doesn’t weaken your teeth or make them more prone to decay when your oral hygiene is good. The key is that it’s planned carefully and carried out by an experienced clinician — which is exactly why who does your Invisalign matters.

How we approach IPR at Toothi

At Toothi in Edgware, your Invisalign treatment is planned digitally and carried out personally by Dr Ali El-Kabengi (GDC 270807). If IPR is part of your plan, we’ll explain why, show you exactly where and how much on your 3D scan, and answer any questions before we begin — nothing happens without you understanding it first.

You can see the full picture, including a simulation of your finished smile, at your free consultation and iTero scan. If you’re also weighing up cost, our Invisalign price guide lays it out clearly.
