The single biggest factor in how well — and how quickly — your Invisalign works isn’t your dentist or your aligners. It’s you, and specifically how many hours a day you actually wear them. That’s what the “22-hour rule” is all about.
What the 22-hour rule means
Aligners are designed to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day — essentially all the time, except when you’re eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing. That leaves roughly two hours a day for meals and cleaning. Wear them less than this and your teeth don’t track with the plan, treatment slows down, and aligners can stop fitting properly.
Why it matters so much
Each aligner is calculated to move your teeth a precise amount before you switch to the next. If they’re out of your mouth too long, the teeth don’t move as planned, the next aligner won’t seat correctly, and you can end up needing extra aligners or a longer treatment. Consistency is what keeps you on schedule and on budget.
Practical tips to stay on track
- Put them back in straight after eating. The most common slip is leaving them out after a meal — build a habit of brushing and re-inserting before you move on.
- Only drink water with them in. Tea, coffee, juice and fizzy drinks can stain or warp aligners and mean extra cleaning.
- Use the case, every time. Most lost aligners get wrapped in a napkin and binned. Keep the case on you.
- Change sets in the evening. New aligners feel tightest at first, so switching before bed means you sleep through it.
- Use chewies. A few minutes gently biting on aligner chewies helps the trays seat fully for a better fit.
What if I slip up?
The occasional longer meal won’t ruin your treatment — just get them back in as soon as you can. If an aligner stops fitting or you lose a set, don’t simply jump ahead; let us know and we’ll advise the safest way to get back on track.
