How well Invisalign works, and how quickly, comes down mostly to how many hours a day you actually wear the aligners. That’s what the “22-hour rule” is about.
What the 22-hour rule means
Aligners are meant to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. In practice that means all the time, except when you’re eating, drinking anything other than water, or brushing. That leaves roughly two hours a day for meals and cleaning. Wear them less and your teeth fall behind the plan, treatment slows down and the aligners can stop fitting properly.
Why it matters so much
Each aligner is made to move your teeth a set amount before you switch to the next one. If they’re out too long, the teeth don’t move as planned, the next aligner won’t seat properly, and you can end up needing extra aligners or a longer treatment. Wearing them consistently keeps you on schedule and on budget.

Practical tips to stay on track
- Put them back in straight after eating. The most common slip is leaving them out after a meal. Get into the habit of brushing and putting them back in before you do anything else.
- Only drink water with them in. Tea, coffee, juice and fizzy drinks can stain or warp aligners, and you’ll be cleaning them more.
- Use the case, every time. Most lost aligners get wrapped in a napkin and binned. Keep the case on you.
- Change sets in the evening. New aligners are tightest at first, so if you switch before bed you sleep through it.
- Use chewies. A few minutes biting gently on aligner chewies helps the trays seat fully, so they fit better.
What if I slip up?
The odd long meal won’t ruin your treatment. Just get them back in as soon as you can. If an aligner stops fitting or you lose a set, don’t skip ahead to the next one. Let us know and we’ll tell you the safest way to get back on track.
