A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once the bone has bonded to it, a connector called an abutment is fitted, and a crown, bridge or denture is attached on top. It is the only way of replacing a tooth that doesn’t lean on the neighbouring teeth or rest on the gum. At Toothi London in Edgware, a single implant including the crown is £1,995.

The three parts of a dental implant
| Part | What it does | At Toothi |
|---|---|---|
| Implant (fixture) | A titanium screw that sits in the jawbone and replaces the tooth root | Osstem TSIII |
| Abutment | A connector that screws into the implant and rises through the gum | Included in the £1,995 |
| Crown | The visible tooth, made to match the shape and shade of your own teeth | Porcelain, made by our lab, included in the £1,995 |
How an implant bonds to the bone
Titanium is used because bone grows directly onto its surface. Over typically around three to six months after placement, the bone knits to the implant in a process called osseointegration. Once that has happened, the implant is anchored firmly enough to take normal biting force, and the crown can be fitted. Because the implant sits in the bone like a root, it also helps keep the bone in that area from shrinking, which it tends to do after a tooth is lost.
Types of implant treatment
| Treatment | What it replaces | Toothi fee |
|---|---|---|
| Single implant with crown | One missing tooth | £1,995 |
| Second implant at the same visit | Two separate missing teeth | £1,795 |
| Implant bridge on 2 implants | Three missing teeth in a row | £4,495 |
| Implant-retained denture, 2–4 implants | A full arch, with a denture that clips onto implants | £7,995 per arch |
| Fixed full-arch bridge (All-on-X) | A full arch, with a fixed bridge that doesn’t come out | Price on assessment |
Who dental implants suit
Most adults who have lost one or more teeth can have implants. The things that matter are:
- Healthy gums. Gum disease needs to be treated and stable first, because the same disease can affect the bone around an implant.
- Enough bone, or bone that can be rebuilt. Your CBCT scan shows this. If bone has shrunk, a bone graft or sinus lift can often make room.
- A fully grown jaw. Implants are for adults, once the jaw has stopped growing.
- General health. Smoking, poorly controlled diabetes, some medicines that affect bone and previous radiotherapy to the jaw all raise the risk of an implant not bonding. None automatically rules you out, and we go through them at your consultation.
Implants compared with bridges and dentures
A bridge fills a gap by fixing a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side, which means drilling those teeth down. A denture rests on the gum and comes out. An implant stands on its own in the bone, leaves the neighbouring teeth untouched and doesn’t move when you eat. It costs more up front and takes months rather than weeks. Read implants vs dentures vs bridge for a side-by-side comparison.
How an implant is placed
After a free consultation and a CBCT 3D scan (taken at a referral imaging centre and paid to them directly), the implant is placed under local anaesthetic in an appointment of typically around an hour. Depending on your case, it is placed through a 3D-printed surgical guide made from your scan or freehand from the same plan. After healing, the abutment and crown are fitted. Common questions
What are dental implants made of?
Most, including the Osstem implants we use, are titanium, because bone bonds directly to it. The crown on top is porcelain. Zirconia (ceramic) implants exist but are much less widely used.
Do dental implants look natural?
The crown is made to match the shape and shade of your own teeth, and the implant itself sits hidden in the bone. How natural it looks depends a lot on the implant’s position and the health of the gum around it, which is why front-tooth implants are planned carefully from the 3D scan.
Are dental implants permanent?
The implant is designed to stay in the bone for the long term, provided the gum and bone around it stay healthy. The crown on top can wear or chip over the years and can be replaced without removing the implant.
Can I get dental implants on the NHS?
Only rarely, in specific clinical situations and usually through a hospital. Toothi is fully private. Read who qualifies for NHS implants.
