Composite bonding for gaps between teeth
Toothi London, Edgware · Last reviewed 25 October 2026
Composite bonding fills small gaps between teeth by adding tooth-coloured composite to the sides of the teeth either side, usually in one visit with no drilling. At Toothi in Edgware, edge bonding is £195 per tooth, £695 for 4 teeth or £995 for 6. The consultation is free, with photos and a same-day written quote. Larger gaps are often better closed with Invisalign.
How It Works
How does gap filling of teeth with bonding work?
Bonding doesn’t move teeth. Instead, it makes the teeth either side of a gap slightly wider so they meet. The composite is shaped and polished by hand and colour-matched so it looks like natural tooth.
For most small gaps the composite sticks to the existing enamel, so there’s no need to drill away healthy tooth. The skill is in sharing the space out evenly so no one tooth ends up looking too wide. That’s why we usually add a little to both neighbouring teeth, and sometimes to the ones next to those as well.

Prices
How much does composite bonding for gaps cost?
Bonding is priced per tooth, not per gap. A single central gap usually means bonding two teeth. If there are several small gaps across the smile, it’s often four or six.

When is Invisalign the better option?
Bonding works best when the gap is small and the teeth are otherwise well lined up. With a large gap, or several gaps, closing the space with composite alone can leave teeth looking too wide or bulky. Moving the teeth first looks more natural.
| Your situation | Usually better suited |
|---|---|
| One small gap, teeth well aligned | Composite bonding |
| Small gaps plus chipped or uneven edges | Composite bonding |
| Larger gap, or teeth already look wide | Invisalign |
| Several gaps across the smile | Invisalign, sometimes followed by bonding |
| Gaps with crooked or rotated teeth | Invisalign |
Invisalign Go Express (£1,495) is designed for spacing and crowding on the front teeth and typically takes around 3 months. Every package includes retainers, an Airflow hygiene clean and Boutique whitening. Some patients do both: aligners to close most of the space, then a little bonding to perfect the shape. Safety
Are gap teeth fillers you buy online safe?
No. DIY gap fillers, mouldable beads and home kits aren’t a safe alternative to bonding, and we’d steer clear of them.
- ✓ They trap food and plaque against the gum, which can lead to gum inflammation and decay.
- ✓ They aren’t bonded, so they can come loose and be swallowed or breathed in.
- ✓ Some gaps have a cause, such as gum disease, that needs diagnosing first.
- ✓ Never use elastic bands to pull teeth together. They can slide under the gum and damage the tooth’s support.
At a free consultation we’ll find out why the gap is there and what will close it safely.
Aftercare
How long does bonding for gapped teeth last?
Composite bonding can last several years with care, and it can be repolished or repaired rather than replaced. The edges next to the old gap need daily cleaning with floss or interdental brushes.
- ✓ Whiten first. Composite doesn’t whiten, so if you want brighter teeth, do that before bonding.
- ✓ Keep up hygiene visits so the composite stays polished.
- ✓ Protect it from grinding with a nightguard (£195) if you clench at night.

Common Questions
Bonding for gaps FAQs
Can composite bonding close a gap between teeth?
Yes, for small gaps. Composite is added to the sides of the teeth either side so they meet. Larger gaps are usually better closed with Invisalign, sometimes with bonding afterwards.
How big a gap can bonding close?
There’s no fixed number. It depends on how wide your teeth are and how the result will look. If closing the gap would make the teeth look too wide, we’ll suggest Invisalign instead.
How much does it cost to fill a gap with bonding?
At Toothi in Edgware, edge bonding is £195 per tooth, £695 for 4 teeth or £995 for 6. A single central gap usually involves two teeth. The consultation is free with a same-day written quote.
Does bonding for gaps damage your teeth?
For most small gaps, the composite is bonded onto the existing enamel without drilling healthy tooth away. It can be polished, repaired or removed later.
Is it done in one appointment?
Usually, yes. Most gaps are closed in a single visit, and a review appointment afterwards is included.
Can I whiten my teeth after bonding a gap?
Whitening won’t change the colour of composite, so whiten first and we match the bonding to your new shade. Whitening is £250 in practice or £350 with home trays.
