What a dental implant actually is
An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. It goes in under local anaesthetic — the same numbing used for a filling. Over the following weeks the bone bonds to the titanium surface, a process called osseointegration, which turns the post into a solid foundation. A custom crown is then made to match the shape and shade of your own teeth and fitted on top.
Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn’t require the healthy teeth on either side to be drilled down. Unlike a denture, it doesn’t move, doesn’t need adhesive and doesn’t come out at night. It also does something neither alternative does: it puts load back through the jawbone, which helps preserve the bone that otherwise shrinks away where a tooth is missing.

Planning
The scan lets us map bone depth and the position of nerves and sinuses before anything begins, so the implant position is planned rather than judged on the day. This planning stage is most of what separates a predictable implant from a difficult one.
Placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients are surprised by how ordinary the appointment feels — the area is fully numb, and afterwards there is usually some tenderness for a few days, managed with over-the-counter painkillers. Healing
The bone fuses to the implant over the following months. Where the gap is visible, you’ll usually wear a temporary tooth in the meantime, so you’re not left with a gap at any point.
