Invisible Braces: What They Are, and How Invisible They Actually Are
Let’s deal with the honest bit first, because almost no dental website will. No brace is genuinely invisible. If someone is standing close enough to shake your hand, and they are specifically looking, they may notice something. What the good options are is near-invisible — unnoticeable in conversation, in photographs and across a meeting room table, which is what people actually mean when they search for this.
That distinction matters, because “invisible braces” is a shop-window phrase covering three genuinely different treatments with different costs, different comfort and different results. Here is what each one is, what it costs in the UK, and how to work out which applies to you.
The three things “invisible braces” actually means
1. Clear aligners. A series of removable, transparent plastic trays, each one moving your teeth a fraction further than the last. You wear them 20–22 hours a day and take them out to eat and brush. This is what most people now mean by invisible braces, and Invisalign® clear aligners are the best-known system. Near-invisible at conversational distance; the small tooth-coloured attachments that grip the aligners are the part people occasionally spot.
2. Lingual braces. Fixed metal braces bonded to the inside surfaces of your teeth, so nothing shows from the front at all. Genuinely the most hidden option. The trade-offs are real: they cost considerably more, they take longer to get used to, and they affect speech for the first few weeks because your tongue sits against them.
3. Ceramic or “clear” fixed braces. Conventional fixed braces with tooth-coloured ceramic brackets instead of metal ones. Less noticeable than metal, but still visibly a brace — this is the least invisible of the three, despite often being marketed under the same heading.
What invisible braces cost in the UK
Prices vary widely by option and by postcode. As a general UK picture:
- Clear aligners: roughly £1,500–£5,500 depending on how much movement is needed and where you go.
- Lingual braces: roughly £4,000–£8,000+, reflecting the custom lab work behind them.
- Ceramic fixed braces: roughly £2,000–£4,500.
At Toothi in Edgware, clear aligner treatment is published in three tiers, and that is the complete treatment fee — on our fees page, not a headline figure that grows once you are in the chair.
| Tier | Price | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Invisalign Go Express | £1,495 | typically around 3 months |
| Invisalign Go | £2,495 | typically around 6 months |
| Invisalign Go Plus | £2,995 | typically around 9 months |
| Complex cases | quoted after assessment | referred on |
Every tier includes a free iTero 3D scan and ClinCheck, all reviews, refinement aligners if needed, removable and fixed retainers, an Airflow hygiene clean and Boutique teeth whitening. There is 0% finance over up to 10 months on treatment over £250, or a longer low-interest term, subject to status.

Which one is right for you?
For most adults with mild to moderate crowding, spacing or relapse after childhood braces, clear aligners are the sensible starting point: removable, comfortable, and unobtrusive enough for work. Lingual braces earn their higher cost when someone needs complete invisibility from the front and has a case better suited to a fixed appliance. Ceramic braces tend to suit complex movements where a fixed system does the job more predictably.
The honest answer is that it depends on your bite, not on marketing. Some cases genuinely are not suited to aligners, and a dentist who tells you that before taking your money is worth more than one who does not.
Seeing the result before you commit
At your first appointment we take an iTero 3D scan — no impression trays — and show you a simulation of the predicted movement on screen before you decide anything. The consultation and the scan are free, and you leave with a written treatment plan and a fixed price whether or not you go ahead. You can book the free scan here.

People also ask
Are invisible braces really invisible?
No — near-invisible is the accurate description. Clear aligners are unnoticeable in normal conversation and in photographs, but visible close up if someone is looking for them, partly because of the small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to some teeth. Lingual braces, fitted behind the teeth, are the only option genuinely hidden from the front.
How much are invisible braces in the UK?
Clear aligners generally run from about £1,500 to £5,500, lingual braces from about £4,000, and ceramic fixed braces from about £2,000. At Toothi, clear aligner treatment is published in three tiers: Invisalign Go Express £1,495, Invisalign Go £2,495 and Invisalign Go Plus £2,995, with complex cases quoted after assessment. There is 0% finance over up to 10 months on treatment over £250, or a longer low-interest term, subject to status.
How long do invisible braces take?
Across the UK market, clear aligner cases vary widely, with simpler cases at the shorter end. At Toothi, Invisalign Go Express takes typically around 3 months, Invisalign Go typically around 6 months and Invisalign Go Plus typically around 9 months. Complex cases are quoted after assessment and referred on where appropriate. Your dentist can give you an estimated number of aligners and a timeline after the 3D scan, before you commit to anything.
Do invisible braces hurt?
Not usually painful, but expect pressure and tenderness for a day or two each time you change to a new aligner — a sign the teeth are moving. Most people find it easily manageable and settle into the routine within the first fortnight.
Can I get invisible braces on the NHS?
Cosmetic orthodontics for adults is not routinely available on the NHS, which funds treatment on clinical need. Adult invisible brace treatment is a private option in almost all cases, and Toothi is a fully private practice.
