Invisalign vs Braces: An Honest Comparison for UK Adults

For most adults with mild-to-moderate crowding or spacing, Invisalign and fixed braces will get you to the same result, at a similar price, in a similar time — and Invisalign wins on appearance, comfort and convenience. For complex bite problems, large tooth movements or cases where compliance is a worry, fixed braces are still the better tool and a good clinician will tell you so.
This page sets out the differences that actually matter, the cases where each option wins, and what both cost in the UK in 2026. We treat Invisalign at our clinic in Edgware, North London, and refer patients on to an orthodontist when fixed braces are the right answer — so we have no reason to push one over the other.

What matters, and what doesn’t
1. Do they straighten teeth equally well?
For the cases Invisalign is designed for — roughly 80% of adults who walk into a practice wanting straighter front teeth — yes. Aligners are excellent at tipping, aligning, closing spacing and correcting mild rotations. Fixed braces retain the edge for large rotations of canines and premolars, closing big extraction spaces, moving teeth up or down (intrusion and extrusion), and significant bite correction. The honest test is not “which is better” but “which is better for your teeth”, and a scan and examination answer it in an hour.
2. Cost
Broadly the same. The price of fixed braces rises with ceramic brackets and lingual (behind-the-teeth) systems; the price of Invisalign rises with the number of aligners. Across UK clinics a mild case is £1,500–£2,500 either way; a moderate one £2,500–£4,000. At Toothi London our own Invisalign fees are fixed at £1,495, £2,495 and £2,995. Neither is available on the NHS for adults.
3. Appearance
This is where most adults decide. Aligners are effectively invisible from a metre away; most people you speak to will not notice them. Ceramic braces are less obvious than metal but still visible. Lingual braces are hidden but take weeks to speak normally with and cost the most.
4. Living with them
Aligners come out to eat, so there is nothing you cannot eat and nothing to pick out of a bracket afterwards. You brush and floss normally. The trade-off is discipline: they must go straight back in after meals, and coffee, tea and red wine stain them, so you drink those with the aligners out. Fixed braces demand nothing of you except avoiding hard and sticky foods, but cleaning around them is difficult and gum inflammation during treatment is common.
5. Comfort
Both move teeth by applying pressure, and both cause some tenderness. Aligners produce a dull pressure for the first day or two of each new set. Fixed braces cause soreness after each adjustment and, in the early weeks, ulcers where wires and brackets rub the cheeks. 6. Speed
For mild-to-moderate cases Invisalign is usually as fast or faster, because the whole series of aligners is planned and made at the start and each one moves the teeth a set amount on a weekly schedule. For complex cases fixed braces can be quicker. See how long Invisalign takes.
7. Predictability
With Invisalign you see a simulation of the end result before you start and a digital plan sets out every stage. With fixed braces the clinician adjusts the wires as they go, which is more flexible but less predictable in timing. Both finish with the same thing: retainers, for life.
How long do metal braces take?
Fixed metal braces usually take 12 to 24 months. Straightforward alignment of the front teeth can finish in 6 to 12 months. Severe crowding that needs extractions, or a significant bite correction, runs to 24 to 36 months. The appliance matters far less than how far your teeth actually have to move — which is why a scan and an examination give you a real answer and a website cannot.

Why braces usually take longer on simple cases
- ✓ The wire sequence is staged. Braces begin on a light, flexible wire and work through progressively thicker and stiffer ones. Each stage takes weeks and the sequence cannot be compressed much.
- ✓ Progress is adjusted, not pre-planned. An aligner series is designed and manufactured up front from a digital plan. With braces the clinician re-shapes and re-ties the wire at each visit, which is flexible but less predictable in timing.
- ✓ Breakages cost weeks. A debonded bracket or a broken wire means an unplanned visit, and often a lost month of movement.
- ✓ Both arches are usually treated from the start, even when the complaint is only about the front teeth.
Where fixed braces are genuinely quicker
This cuts both ways, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. Braces are faster where the movement itself is hard for aligners: closing large extraction spaces, moving roots bodily through bone, big rotations of canines and premolars, and moving teeth up or down in the jaw. They also correct significant bite discrepancies more efficiently, particularly with elastics.
There is also the compliance point. A fixed brace works 24 hours a day whether or not you are motivated. Aligners worn 14 hours a day move nothing on schedule and simply generate refinements. If you already suspect you would not keep them in, braces are the faster route for you — not in theory, but in practice.
What about “six month” braces?
Short-term systems such as Six Month Smiles align the front six to eight teeth and deliberately leave the back teeth and the bite alone. On a cosmetic front-teeth case they typically finish in 4 to 9 months. They are not a faster version of full orthodontics — they are a smaller treatment, with a narrower scope and the same lifelong retainer requirement. Invisalign’s shorter tiers do a comparable job in a comparable time without visible brackets on the front teeth.

Which is right for you?
Choose Invisalign if…
- ✓ Your problem is crowding, spacing, a gap or relapse after childhood braces
- ✓ You work with the public, present, or are simply not prepared to wear visible braces
- ✓ You want to eat normally and keep your teeth clean easily
- ✓ You are disciplined enough to wear them 20–22 hours a day
- ✓ You want to see the likely result before committing
Choose fixed braces if…
- ✓ You have severe crowding needing extractions, or a significant bite problem
- ✓ Your case needs large rotations or vertical tooth movements
- ✓ You know you would not keep aligners in for 22 hours a day
- ✓ An orthodontist has advised it for your case
- ✓ Appearance during treatment does not matter to you

How long do metal braces take?
Twelve to twenty-four months for most adults. Straightforward front-teeth alignment can finish in 6–12 months; severe crowding needing extractions or a significant bite correction takes 24–36 months. What decides it is how far the teeth have to move, not the appliance.
How long do braces take for mild crowding?
Usually 9–15 months with fixed braces, against typically around 3 months with Invisalign Go Express for the same case. Mild crowding of the front teeth is where aligners have their clearest time advantage.
Do six-month braces really take six months?
Roughly, yes — but only because they do less. Short-term systems align the front six to eight teeth and leave the bite untouched, typically finishing in 4–9 months. They are a smaller treatment rather than a faster one, and still need retainers for life.
Is Invisalign faster than braces?
For mild-to-moderate cases, usually yes. For complex cases fixed braces can be faster because they apply continuous force.
Does Invisalign hurt less than braces?
Most patients say so. Aligners cause pressure for a day or two per new set; braces cause soreness after adjustments plus rubbing and ulcers from brackets and wires, especially early on.
Can Invisalign fix an overbite or underbite?
Mild-to-moderate overbite, overjet and crossbite, yes. Severe skeletal bite problems usually need fixed braces, sometimes with jaw surgery, and are referred on to an orthodontist.
Can I switch from braces to Invisalign?
Often, yes — some patients start with fixed braces for the difficult movements and finish with aligners. It depends on the case and needs to be planned by the clinician treating you.
Am I too old for either?
No. Teeth can be moved at any age provided the gums and bone are healthy. Around a third of orthodontic patients in the UK are now adults, and a large share of our Invisalign patients are in their 30s to 60s. See braces for adults.
