Composite bonding is the least destructive way to change the shape, edge or colour of a front tooth: the composite is built onto the enamel and shaped by hand, usually with no drilling and no anaesthetic. • ✓  Chipped or worn edges. The commonest reason people come in. A chipped incisor can usually be rebuilt in one appointment.

Bonding is a resin. It is not as hard as porcelain, it picks up stain at the margins over time, and it can chip if you grind your teeth or bite your nails. If you want a wholesale change in the shape and colour of eight or ten teeth and you want it to stay looking identical for fifteen years, veneers from £595 per tooth are the more honest recommendation — at the cost of removing some enamel permanently, which bonding does not require.

Equally, if the underlying problem is that the teeth are crowded rather than misshapen, bonding over the top of it is cosmetic camouflage. Invisalign from £1,495 followed by a small amount of bonding to finish the edges usually gives a better and longer-lasting result than bonding alone. We will say which of these applies to you at the consultation, even when it means recommending the cheaper option.

This matters and it is often skipped. Composite does not lighten with whitening gel — only natural enamel does. If you whiten after bonding, the bonded teeth stay at the old shade and the mismatch is obvious. So if you want a lighter smile, we whiten first, let the shade settle for a couple of weeks, then match the composite to the new colour.

Well-cared-for bonding lasts around five to eight years before it needs repolishing or replacing. Coffee, red wine, tea and smoking are what dull it. A polish at your hygiene appointment keeps the surface bright, and small chips can usually be repaired rather than redone.
