• ✓  Chipped or worn edges. The most common reason people come in. A chipped incisor can usually be rebuilt in one appointment with edge bonding at £195.
• ✓  Small gaps. Closing a diastema between the upper front teeth without orthodontics, where the gap is modest.
• ✓  Uneven lengths. Evening up the edges so the smile line reads level.
• ✓  Slightly rotated or peg-shaped teeth. Disguising minor irregularity when you don’t want aligner treatment. Usually a composite veneer at £295.
• ✓  Discoloured single teeth. Where whitening won’t lift one dark tooth to match its neighbours.

Bonding is a resin. It isn’t as hard as porcelain, it picks up stain at the margins over time, and it can chip if you grind your teeth or bite your nails. If you want to change the shape and colour of eight or ten teeth and have them look the same in fifteen years, porcelain veneers at £895 per tooth are the better recommendation. The catch is that some enamel has to be removed for good, which bonding doesn’t need.

And if the real problem is that the teeth are crowded rather than misshapen, bonding over the top only hides it. Invisalign from £1,495 followed by a small amount of bonding to finish the edges usually gives a better and longer-lasting result than bonding alone. We’ll tell you at the consultation which applies to you, even if that means the smaller treatment.

This gets skipped a lot. Composite doesn’t lighten with whitening gel; only natural enamel does. If you whiten after bonding, the bonded teeth stay at the old shade and the mismatch is obvious. So if you want a lighter smile, we whiten first, let the shade settle for a couple of weeks, then match the composite to the new colour.

Well-cared-for bonding lasts around five to eight years before it needs repolishing or replacing. Coffee, red wine, tea and smoking are what dull it. A polish at your hygiene appointment keeps the surface bright, and small chips can usually be repaired rather than redone.
