What bonding actually is
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that is sculpted directly onto your tooth, layer by layer, and hardened with a light. Because it is added rather than cut, the tooth underneath is largely untouched — which is the single biggest argument for bonding over porcelain veneers. If you dislike the result in five years, bonding can be removed and you still have your own tooth. A prepped veneer is irreversible.
The trade-off is honest: composite stains more readily than porcelain and chips more easily. Expect to have edges polished or repaired every few years, and to replace bonding after roughly five to eight years. Red wine, coffee and smoking shorten that.
Bonding does well: chipped incisal edges, small gaps and black triangles, worn-down front teeth, mildly rotated teeth, teeth that are slightly too short, uneven edges, and masking small discolourations.
Bonding struggles with: heavily discoloured teeth (tetracycline staining, dead teeth), significantly crooked teeth, and cases where you grind heavily. If your teeth are noticeably crooked, adding composite to disguise the position makes the teeth bulky and unnatural — the right sequence is Invisalign first to get the teeth in position, then bonding to perfect the edges. That order costs more and takes longer, and it is still the right answer. We will say so.
Whiten first, bond second
Composite cannot be whitened. Whatever shade your natural teeth are on the day we bond is the shade the bonding is matched to — permanently. So if you are thinking about whitening at any point, do it before bonding, not after. Power whitening is £250 and home trays £350, and we leave two weeks between whitening and bonding for the shade to settle.
Patients who bond first and whiten later end up with bright natural teeth and darker composite that no longer matches. It is the most common and most avoidable mistake in cosmetic dentistry.
Looking after bonding
Do not bite your nails, open packaging with your teeth or chew pens — composite edges chip. If you grind at night, a nightguard (£200) protects the investment. Keep up hygiene appointments; a polish keeps surface staining down. And accept that bonding is a maintained restoration, not a permanent one.

How long does composite bonding last?
Five to eight years with reasonable care, with occasional repolishing along the way. Chips can usually be repaired rather than redone.
Does it hurt?
Almost never. Because we are adding material rather than drilling the tooth, most bonding is done with no anaesthetic at all.
Will it look fake?
Not if it is done properly. Good bonding has translucency at the edges, subtle surface texture and a shade that matches your neighbouring teeth. Bad bonding is flat, opaque and too white — which is what people are picturing when they say they do not want it to look fake.
Can bonding close gaps?
Yes, small to moderate gaps very well. Very large gaps closed by bonding alone leave teeth looking too wide, so we would usually suggest closing most of the space with aligners and finishing with bonding.
Can bonding be removed?
Yes — that is the point. It can be polished off and your natural tooth is still there. That reversibility is the main reason to choose it over veneers if you are unsure.
